Initial Import[]

Startup

Scan for Files...

The first time you run MusicBee after installation, you will see the dialog at right.

Choose Folders

Choose Folders...

If you have an existing iTunes or Windows Media Player library, you can choose to import it now. (If you missed this step, you can still import an existing library by going to File > Import Library in the MusicBee program menu. For Media Monkey libraries, check out this forum post.)

MusicBee should automatically detect your public and personal Music folders. You can add any other folders you wish to include by selecting "Choose Folders..."

By default, MusicBee will not move any files scanned, only link to their current location; if you wish to change this, enable "auto-organize" from Library Preferences.

All files at this stage will be added directly to your Music Library. If you wish to import files to your Inbox instead, you should close the initial import screen and look at the Scan Folders for New Files option.

Scan Folders for New Files[]

Rescan-Add

Scan Folders for New Files

To manually import files at any time, you can go to File > Scan Folders for New Files in the program menu or use the 'Insert' hotkey for the same command. Either one will open the dialog at right.

As with the initial import, you can select any number of local or networked folders to scan. This screen offers options to scan videos and playlists, as well. You can also restrict your scan to selected file types.

Destination for new files:

Choose if you want the new files added to your Inbox instead of directly adding to your library.

  • Add to Inbox
  • Add to Library (Default)
mark and send duplicates to the Inbox

(Default: unticked) MusicBee will attempt to identify duplicate tracks and filter them from the library.?

minimise to status bar when scan starts

(Default: ticked) Minimizes the pop-up window so you can continue to work with your library while the scan is taking place (bear in mind that many other functions will be delayed until the scan is done). This can also be done later with the normal minimize button. Scan progress will still appear in the status bar, and double clicking that info will reopen the window.

Monitored Folders[]

Once you're past the initial import, you may find it helpful to have MusicBee monitor certain folders for new files. See Library Preferences for details on configuring Monitored Folders.

Other Import Options[]

You can generally drag & drop music files from Windows Explorer into the Navigator, a tab, or the main panel of the MusicBee window. (This may not work as desired for files from CDs/DVDs and other removable drives.) Holding CTRL while dragging tracks into MusicBee will cause them to be copied into your library.

If MusicBee is configured to work in Windows context menus, you can play or queue tracks (or playlists) from Windows Explorer. This only adds the file to the Playing Tracks list, not the library. Double clicking a playlist in Windows Explorer will load the tracks into Playing Tracks, but will not add it as a playlist. If you want to add the tracks to your library you will either need to save it as a library playlist once it's loaded or add it another way.
